August Meeting of the Working Group Co-Chairs

The monthly Working Group Co-Chair Meeting was held on August 12, 2009.  There were two primary agenda topics. First, Warren Randolph of the Safety Working Group reviewed the objectives, process, and plan for the Safety Assessment Prototype that is part of their FY10/11 Work Plan (for those with KSN access, look here ).  The Safety Assessment Prototype will explore the feasibility and value of performing an initial safety assessment by the Working Groups at the Operational Improvement (OI) level as additional input to the Offices of Primary Responsibility for the OIs.  Also on the agenda was a review of the changes being made to the ConOps (v 3.0) and the review process.

Research Transition Team Progress

For the past two years, to support the implementation of the Integrated Work Plan (IWP), FAA, NASA and the JPDO have been planning for the transition of research results from NASA’s Airspace Systems Program to the FAA for eventual implementation in the National Airspace System (NAS).  Dubbed Research Transition Teams (RTTs), four specific teams were formed and are now finalizing their plans for approval next month.  The four teams are:  Efficient Flow Into Congested Airspace (EFICA), Integrated Arrival/Departure/Surface (IADS), Multi-Sector Planner (MSP), and Dynamic Airspace Configuration (DAC).

Each team supports NextGen capability needs as defined in the NextGen Concept of Operations (ConOps), Enterprise Architecture, and IWP as follows:  EFICA and IADS support Trajectory Management; MSP supports Flow Contingency Management; and DAC supports Capacity Management.  As the plans are approved, the details can be added to the JPE to provide further definition to the research to implementation pathways.  Further description of the RTTs can be found on the JPDO.gov Web site, here and here.

Final Draft Working Group FY10/11 Work Plans

The final drafts of the JPDO Working Group Work Plans have been completed and are now posted on the JPDO KSN site (for those with access to the KSN, look here ).  These work plans were created from:

• FY09 plans that will continue into FY10
• Logical successors to FY09 work plans
• Input from JPDO Division Directors and Working Group Co-Chairs
• Identified gaps to achieve meaningful progress on priority categories

Barring any changes from the final review process, these plans will be implemented starting October 1, 2009.

SPC Meeting Scheduled

The NextGen Senior Policy Committee Meeting has been scheduled for September 14, 2009, and the agenda is under development.  A special meeting of the JPDO Board will be held August 31 to review the SPC agenda items and prepare any issues in advance of the SPC Meeting.

July Update to the JPDO’s FY09 Work Plan

The latest update to the JPDO FY09 Work Plan, based on the results of the July JPDO Monthly Review Meeting, has been posted to the JPDO Web site (www.jpdo.gov, under Knowledge Center >>Collateral Library>>Technical Documents).  Several milestones were completed, and the JPDO is on track to successfully finish its work plan by the end of the fiscal year.
